I am about to construct a covering for my friends horse stables. It is going to be located under a tree and here in Florida it rains frequently. The water is going to keep dripping on the top and eventually rust. Is there some sort of coating I can put on top? Is it a spray or? What is the best type?

I think the typical solution, if you're using steel, is paint, possibly zinc paint. A spray would work, or you can get it pre-dipped. Or you can go with aluminum, which is more expensive, but not as amenable to rust - you can get it anodized (a chemical bath process) or covered with alodine to help further.
If you're using stainless steel, you can get it passivated or electroplated. Both are chemical baths.

The problem with using galvanized steel is, if you have to cut it, it will rust on the edges. You can get cold galvanising paint but it's not as good as the original finish.

Why not use wooden shingles which are common in the US?

I am trying to construct this as quickly and as easily as possible. I want to be up and out of the Florida sun as possible. Could I cut it and then get the edges dipped?
